چکیده

Apart from the Milky Way, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the only other normal star-forming galaxy that was conclusively detected in high energy (> 100 MeV) γ-rays by the Energetic Gamma Ray Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. However, the sensitivity of EGRET was sufficient only to marginally resolve the LMC. We report on measurements of the γ-ray emission from the LMC by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. For the first time an externally viewed star-forming galaxy is well resolved in γ-rays. We discuss the distribution of the LMC diffuse emission as seen by the LAT and implications for cosmic-ray (CR) physics.

Fermi Observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud

We report on observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. The LMC is clearly detected with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and for the first time the emission is spatially well resolved in gamma-rays. Our observations reveal that the bulk of the gamma-ray emission arises from the 30 Doradus region. We discuss this result in light of the massive star popula...

Observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud with Fermi

We report on observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. The LMC is clearly detected with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and for the first time the emission is spatially well resolved in gamma-rays. Our observations reveal the massive star forming region 30 Doradus as a bright source of gamma-ray emission in the LMC. The observations furthermore show tha...

Detection of the Small Magellanic Cloud in gamma-rays with Fermi/LAT

Context. The flux of gamma rays with energies greater than 100 MeV is dominated by diffuse emission coming from cosmic-rays (CRs) illuminating the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy through the processes of Bremsstrahlung, pion production and decay, and inverse-Compton scattering. The study of this diffuse emission provides insight into the origin and transport of cosmic rays. Aims. We sea...

Fermi LAT Measurements of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission at Intermediate Galactic Latitudes

The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission is produced by cosmic rays (CRs) interacting with the interstellar gas and radiation field. Measurements by the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) indicated excess γ-ray emission ≥ 1 GeV relative to diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission models consistent with directly measured CR spectra (the so-c...

Gamma-ray Burst Theory in the Fermi Era

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite detected emission above 20 MeV only in a small fraction of the long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) at 8 keV-40 MeV. Those bursts that were detected by the LAT were among the brightest GBM bursts. The emission detected by LAT seerms to be delayed respect to the one detected by the GBM. In thi...
